In 2008 J.J. Abrams brought us a little found footage movie called Cloverfield. While I didn’t have the chance to catch the film when it released in theaters, I became obsessed with all things Cloverfield once my roommate at the time, Magnum(yup his name is Magnum) showed it to me. I went online and found out all about these videos and backstory that the movie didn’t really talk about. I went through a large number of pages in message boards and threads about people finding out clues and leads that were being released to fans everywhere, fans that had never seen Cloverfield but still came together to discuss and play along as a team. Here’s more on the ARG for Cloverfield. ARG stands for Alternate Reality Game, in the past other properties have made use of this in order to promote or add backstory to their game/film.
Years passed, I rarely brought up Cloverfield except during Comic-Con when sometimes people would bring up the ARG and suddenly my mouth just oozed rainbows as I geeked out with others involved in it, eventually Cloverfield would end up like Rob and Beth, buried beneath the rubble of my weird brain, that is until January 15 2016. I woke up that friday morning and checked my phone like most of us do, my notifications covered the entire screen. It wasn’t text messages or twitter, but rather YouTube that covered my lovely wallpaper, when my eyes finally adjusted I was sure I was still asleep as Paramount Pictures had just uploaded a trailer for something called 10 Cloverfield Lane. I must have watched the trailer ten times before I decided to do a little research on the film, how is it that this is releasing in 2 months and I haven’t heard of something Cloverfield related? was it Cloverfield related? SlashFilm told me it was. They reported on a quote by JJ Abrams calling Cloverfield a blood relative of 10 Cloverfield Lane.
Cloverfield had an ARG, Super 8 had an ARG, I missed both of those when they were a thing, I wasn’t about to miss this one. I crossed my fingers and hoped to dear Mr. Grumpy Pants (the monster in the first one) that there would be an ARG for this one. That’s when I came across leel boys Steve Zaragoza and Mike Falzone’s podcast about Cloverfield titled Cloverfeels. On that podcast Mike and Steve did a recap of the first ARG and it brought me back to my countless hours in front of a computer trying to learn everything I could on Slusho! Shortly after trying to email soda companies and overplaying “I think we’re alone now” that played during the 10CL trailer, Dan Trachtenberg, the film’s director – confirms it. There IS an ARG for 10CL. I began checking the subreddit for /r/10CloverfieldLane and /r/Cloverfeels more than I would check instagram, I joined in on the conversation and I even ordered a case of Swamp Pop to join in on the fun! I’ve watched Cloverfield at least 5 times more since the 10CL trailer came out and I’m talking everyone’s ear out regarding Cloverfield and the wonders of ARGs.
Fast forward to Deadpool’s theater release. There was talk online about different images flashing at the end of the 10CL trailers released that weekend, people tried recording and deciphering the images in question with one thing in common, Numbers. They all had numbers in some way. Now this isn’t the only component of the ARG just one of the finds but probably my favorite one by far. Check out the subreddit if you want the WHOLE thing but I have to warn you, its a fun magical rabbit hole you might spend some time on. Numbers, right. Back to the numbers. After applying a number of filters and finding out the order of the images people came to the conclusion that the numbers were coordinates. Those coordinates were visited this morning by reddit user /u/MugensKeeper who found an empty bottle of Satsuma Fizz Swamp Pop over a mound of dirt. MugensKeeper grabbed a shovel and got to work! In that hole he found a 1344 cartridge that contained survival gear, a USB, a note, among other things.
The best part about this is that people are coming together to talk about shared interests, Paramount has managed for their fans to promote the movie for them. I can’t think of any better way to make the anticipation for the movie any more bearable than by gradually giving clues to their fans about a film none of us has even seen. Even if 10 Cloverfield Lane ends up being just an OKAY movie, I would be okay because I walk away with the experience of playing an ARG while its happening.
Here’s a TL;DR by reddit user /u/CptSupermrkt
Cloverfield (the 2008 film) had an extensive alternate reality game (ARG) prior to the films release. It involved people hunting around for clues from website to website, ultimately building up an extensive backstory to the film. The new Cloverfield film (releasing next month) similarly has a new mysterious ARG that has been going for several weeks now. But we’ve kind of been at a standstill, with no one making any significant progress on any leads. Until last night. Some genius ran a series of the new ARG images through some filters and discovered hidden words and numbers. Putting these numbers in a specific order revealed a set of coordinates in Louisiana (where the film takes place).OP drove to those coordinates and found a case with a USB stick, etc. buried under one foot of dirt. And that’s where we are now, waiting to see OP deliver with some pictures/video. This is either a film ARG legend in the making, or a big hoax. I’m hoping for the former.
I’ve probably overloaded you with information so I’ll leave you to check the links on your own and experience the madness for yourself. Dig around enough and you might even spot a leel unboxing of Satsuma Fizz by a familiar face. As always sound of below or over @NerdworkTweets! I will update the post when MK lets us know what’s in the box!
