Do you have a Windows phone? Want to make some quick money off your friends? Ask Cortana who she thinks will win in the World Cup, and make a bet. I’d trust her, considering she’s 8-0 on predicting winners. This is according to Marcus Ash, group program manager for Cortana, who has taken to tweeting and posting screenshots of her predictions.
However, assuming it uses the same algorithm Bing uses to determine the winner it could, potentially, make a mistake, at some point. On June 11th, the prediction for Team USA was 3 losses. Instead USA won 2 games, narrowly, but effectively. Here’s how Microsoft explained the algorithm used:
“For the tournament, our models evaluate the strength of each team through a variety of factors such as previous win/loss/tie record in qualification matches and other international competitions and margin of victory in these contests, adjusted for location since home field advantage is a known bias,” Microsoft said. “Further adjustments are made related to other factors which give one team advantages over another, such as home field (for Brazil) or proximity (South American teams), playing surface (hybrid grass), game-time weather conditions, and other such factors.”
With Cortanas track record (counting both her World Cup predictions and her effectiveness fighting the Covenant) will you trust her? Thinking about betting on the games? Enjoying the cup? Give us a shout down in the comments, or tweet us at @NerdworkTweets
