Yes. It is VERY EARLY and I’m WIDE AWAKE. WHY? No, not to go to the gym or be productive as an adult, but rather to feast my viewing balls into the first trailer for the upcoming Star Wars anthology film, Rogue One.
The trailer features everything you’d expect from a Star Wars film and will most likely be the closest thing we get to the expanded universe developing on screen. Seemingly in the same style of the battlefront novels published under the Star Wars moniker, Rogue One airs a darker more serious tone that focuses on the conflict of galactic war as told from the front lines. Felicity Jones’s character Jyn Erso is front and center as our lead who basically spells out the meaning of the rebellion with her hard headed nature and ability to spring into trouble as she is tasked, or rather punished, with investigating a looming weapons test for the Empire’s new weapon, The Death Star. We also get a brief look at Diego Luna as a rebel soldier as well as the group of Rag Tags that will ultimately join Jyn in her quest to retrieve Empire Intel.
The trailer shows the Empire in full force with a wide variety of Stormtroopers, Scout Troopers and Imperial Walkers at their disposal, as well as a brand new menace dressed in white and a cloaked figure with apparent ties to the emperor as the Royal Guard makes an appearance too. It might be too much to ask for but I’m hoping for the man in white to be a spirit successor to the now legend, Grand Admiral Thrawn, as for the hooded figure to be part of the Inquisitors as seen on Star Wars: Rebels who were tasked to hunt down the Jedi that survived Order 66.
Gareth Edwards seems to be taking this in the right direction to make this a war story that could potentially rival the tone of Empire Strikes Back, but I may be getting ahead of myself. This has definitely jumped to the top of the list of films to look forward to for 2016.Check out the trailer and the series of screen grabs we put together for you, catch your breath and let us know what you think over @NerdworkTweets or in the comments below, also if you’d like to hear more about Rogue One check out our friends’ podcast Rebel Grrrl over at MakingStarWars on Friday for potential talk and buzz around the latest Star Wars film.
