Before I begin folks, minor SPOILER alert for Guardians, if you haven’t seen it yet, I don’t know how you can live with yourself and you’re probably one of those people that hates puppies. I WILL TAKE YOU TO SEE IT IF YOU’RE IN THE AREA! JUST GET IT OVER WITH. With that said, let’s keep the Guardians of The Galaxy momentum going and talk about another character that was briefly referenced in the movie, Cosmo the dog. We saw him twice in the movie, inside one of the pods during the first scene with The Collector, and right at the end before a certain someone pops up.
Cosmo, was a part of the Soviet Space Program as one of their test animals that were launched into space. While his task was to orbit around earth, somewhere around the 1960’s, Cosmo drifted off into space ending up in the scientific space station at the edge of the universe known as Knowhere, it is unclear when he mutated and gained his psychic abilities. His first appearance was in Nova #8 back in 2008, where he welcomes a distraught Richard Rider(Nova) to the city inside the severed celestial head, Knowhere. Nova #8 also marks the first appearance of the city, given the number of firsts and the sudden spike in popularity for Marvel’s cosmic side, the issue itself has now become even more sought out by collectors. Don’t worry — keep reading and I may or may not have one to giveaway to a lucky reader.
Cosmo serves as security chief for Knowhere and is afilliated with the Guardians of the Galaxy, aiding them by finding trouble spots in the universe. He fought alongside Nova to seal the creature known as Abyss. He is an incredibly smart and powerful telepath. Despite the film portraying him as just a dog in a spacesuit, Cosmo is powerful enough to unleash a telekinetic blast capable of disabling two super teams. (The Guardians and the Luminals)
Cosmo is definitely a fan favorite and a valuable asset to the Cosmic team, here’s to hoping he gets a bigger part in the next installment to Guardians of The Galaxy. What did you think of Cosmo?
